WORLD AIDS DAY - Dec. 1, 2008
bike collection drive
To commemorate World AIDS Day, Bikes Without Borders is taking your used bikes, refurbishing them and distributing them to HIV/AIDS care workers and community groups in Malawi, Africa.
Malawian community groups and care workers typically walk long distances to obtain lifesaving medications from faraway health centres, and often walk from village to village providing medication and educating communities about the spread of HIV/AIDS. Their work is instrumental in stemming the spread of the disease; the donated bicycles will enable them to move quickly and better support their clients.
If you have good-quality, working-condition (or requiring minor repair) hybrid, commuter and mountain bike, bring it to Mountain Equipment Co-op at 400 King St. W on World AIDS Day, Monday December 1, between 10 am and 7 pm.
We are asking for a donation of $10 with each bike to help offset the cost of shipping the bikes to Malawi, with exceptions for low-income donors. Those that can't make it to the Monday event can bring their bike to Mountain Equipment Co-op on Saturday Nov. 29 between 11 am and 6 pm.
Both days will feature DJ entertainment, volunteer-baked cookies and pastries, and a sneak preview of Bikes Without Borders' new fall/winter line of organic cotton and bamboo hoodies, jackets and long sleeve tees.
